With so many game-to-film and game-to-TV series adaptations in the works, there’s the obvious question as to what titles could come next.
One developer that has likely ruled out its games from making such a jump is Rockstar Games, the creators of the “Grand Theft Auto,” “Bully,” and “Red Dead Redemption” franchises.
The company’s co-founder and former executive Dan Houser, speaking with The Ankler recently, said the reasoning isn’t a lack of interest, especially as several studios are eager.
Rather, it’s one of basic economics. He says:
“They [the studios] thought we’d be blinded by the lights and that just wasn’t the case. We had what we considered to be multi-billion-dollar IP, and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense. In those days, the perception was that games made poor-quality movies.”
That is changing, and partly because of that he and other former Rockstar developers founded their Absurd Ventures label.
The interview comes as Rockstar North’s work in Scotland is being celebrated with an exhibition set to run at the National Museum of Scotland from June 29 until November 3rd.
