By It looks like a U.S. distributor has stepped forward to take on the young Donald Trump film “The Apprentice” according to Deadline.
The film made a big splash in Cannes where offshore territories were acquired quickly and a release expected to happen this Fall, during the presidential campaign in late September and October.
Now, Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff Entertainment is reportedly closing in on acquiring “The Apprentice” for North America with the hope being a deal will be done by the end of the week.
Ortenberg, who has overseen distribution of films like “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Spotlight” and “Nightcrawler,” has reportedly been trying to tie down a deal for at least a month.
Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, Sebastian Stan stars as Trump and Jeremy Strong as his mentor lawyer Roy Cohn in a film that traces the formative years of the former president. Maria Bakalova also stars as ex-wife Ivana Trump.
Multiple streamers and studios have steered clear over fear of reprisals. Another complication is a partial financier is Trump supporter and former Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder who has disparaged the film.
The outlet indicates backer Kinematics will soon be “bought out of Snyder’s $5 million investment with a premium”.
