NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock has announced an August 23rd premiere date for the new version of John Woo’s 1989 action classic “The Killer”.
Woo himself is directing this remake of what’s arguably his best film. That original starred Chow Yun-fat as a Hong Kong hitman who accidentally blinds a young nightclub singer during a shootout on his final job.
She needs a corneal transplant or will lose what remains of her sight, so he agrees to kill a high-ranking triad boss to pay for the operation even as a police detective closes in on him.
The remake, scripted by Oscar winner Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential,” “Mystic River”) shifts the action to Paris. “Game of Thrones” and “Fast and Furious” star Nathalie Emmanuel plays Zee, an infamous assassin known as the Queen of the Dead.
When she refuses an assignment by her handler (Sam Worthington) to kill a blinded young woman named Jenn (Diana Silvers), she loses her alliances and attract the attention of a savvy police investigator Sy (Omar Sy).
The pair become caught up in a sinister criminal conspiracy that will set her on a collision course with her own past. Eric Cantona, Tchéky Karyo and Grégory Montel co-star.
Charles Roven and Alex Gartner produce the film.
