FromSoftware is set to release its first batch of “Elden Ring” DLC this week with the expansion ‘Shadow of the Erdtree’ – and already it is making history.
With 58 reviews counted, the title has pulled in a 95/100 on Metacritic and set itself at #37 on the site’s greatest game of all time list – sandwiched directly between two “Grand Theft Auto” entries with ‘San Andreas’ and ‘Vice City’.
It’s just one point shy of the 96/100 the main game scored with that title sitting at #26. ‘Erdtree’ is by far the highest-rated FromSoftware DLC release, coming in ahead of the original “Dark Souls” DLC ‘Astorias of the Abyss’ (89) and “Bloodborne” with its ‘The Old Hunters’ (87) expansion.
It’s also the highest-rated DLC of all time on the site. To access the expansion, players must have beaten the bosses Radahn and Mohg in the campaign – to date, stats have indicated that less than 40% of players have done so.
Once you can access the expansion’s new area, the Land of Shadow, the main story reportedly takes around 20 hours to complete compared to the 60 hours of the main game. Even so, 20 hours is as big as many major games, and one of the longest single pieces of DLC to go online.
The expansion will be released on Friday for PlayStation, Xbox and PC consoles. The main “Elden Ring” game has sold over 25 million copies since its launch February 2022.
