“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” opened to a strong $104.6 million global haul this weekend, a number on par with its production budget that suggests its going to be quite profitable for the studio.
The success, something sorely lacking at the Summer box-office this year, means talk of another entry – a fifth – in the franchise is already swirling.
Out promoting the film, producer Jerry Bruckheimer says the reason for the success is simple – “if you make something the audience wants to see, they’re going to go see it… If it works for them, they’ll line up.”
The trick however is figuring out what the audience wants to see:
“I wish we all knew what that was. We all have hits every time – [and then] we don’t…. The audience is a lot smarter than we are. I don’t know what the audience wants, I just make what I like. I just try to make movies that I want to go see.”
Asked if he’s already developing a fifth one, he says: “We want to see how this one did at the box office, and I’m sure we’ll have conversations this week.”
As past of the recent press tour, per EW, star Will Smith revealed his condition for his return after a fourth film. He indicated that as long as the story remains compelling enough, he’d be happy to continue:
“Well, these younger actors are going to need to do more of the stunts, that’s for sure. It is a world and characters that are just an absolute joy to be with. In a movie theater with Mike and Marcus, it just feels like home.
So, as long as there’s a reason – I never wanted to be one of those dudes who make sequels just because people will go. I want to make them because there is something to say and the characters have a place that they’re developing to that will be interesting and fun to watch and maybe even a little helpful.
Is there something that can happen in these characters’ lives that is worth asking people to go to a movie theater for? And with this movie, the answer is a resounding yes.”
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is playing in cinemas everywhere now.
