Indie distributor GKIDS has landed global videogram and digital transactional rights (excluding China) to Riot Games and Fortiche Productions’ Emmy-winning animated series “Arcane”.
Set within the “League of Legends” universe, it follows the origins of League champions Vi and Jinx as they become caught in the power struggle between the utopian city of Piltover and the oppressed underground city of Zaun.
According to GKIDS, they will release a full product array later this year including digital editions, and a 4K version that will only be available as a home entertainment release.
That marks a rare physical media release for Netflix who have only brought out a small handful of titles for sale on disc to date.
Co-created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, “Arcane” has been a major success – landing four Emmys and nine Annies awards for streamer Netflix where the first season aired.
The deal was announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Monday. A second season is targeting a November launch.
