Paul Giamatti has closed a deal to star in a TV series based on Eli Roth’s gory horror film franchise “Hostel”.
Roth, Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss all returning for the project as executive producers with the title being made at production company Fifth Season (“Severance”).
Currently in development with no streamer attached, the project is dubbed an “modern adaptation” and “reinvention” of the material, and now more of an “elevated thriller” than the 2006 film or its sequels.
Roth and Briggs will pen the script, with Roth set to direct. Roth, Briggs and Fleiss will all executive produce the series.
The original film followed three American backpackers as they headed to a Slovak city for a wild time, with no idea of the hell that awaits them as they are eventually taken one-by-one by an organization that allows people to torture and kill others. It grossed $82 million worldwide
Giamatti will star in a key role, with character specifics under wraps. The duo first met during production on the first “Hostel” which was being shot in Prague whilst Giamatti was shooting “The Illusionist”.
