Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is powering on overseas, taking $40.6 million in its second weekend of release internationally.
With two weekends under its belt, the new chapter int he franchise has generated $237 million worldwide and is already the fourth-highest grossing movie of the year behind only “Dune: Part Two” at $710 million, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $561 million and “Kung Fu Panda 4” at $561 million.
That said, with its $160 million budget it needs to be closer to that half billion mark to be in profit.
Its faring better than John Krasinski’s fantasy-comedy “IF” which topped the domestic but came second in the international box-office this weekend. In the U.S. it’s set to snag $35 million which is in line with expectations.
Internationally though it only collected $20 million and sits at a $59 million total in its opening weekend. It will need good word-of-mouth as its $110 million budget means it needs to perform well.
“The Garfield Movie,” which hasn’t hit the U.S. as yet, has already racked up $49 million so far in select international markets. It is slated to finally open domestically this coming week where it will take on “Furiosa” for the Memorial Day weekend holiday.
