After breaking through with cult classic “Donnie Darko,” filmmaker Richard Kelly saw his career go off the rails somewhat with “Southland Tales”.
Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore and Justin Timberlake starred in the Los Angeles-set satire which premiered a 160-minute rough cut eighteen years ago at Cannes to scathing reviews.
The $17 million-budget film was subsequently edited down to 144 minutes. It opened in November that year to divided reviews and did not even crack the $400,000 box-office mark.
That said, the film has since gained a cult following, and Kelly himself has no plans to let it go. He recently revealed that he wants to make a prequel.
Speaking with Interview Magazine (via World of Reel), Kelly says he has a finished script that’s ready to film and will cover the first three chapters of his six-chapter saga (the 2006 film covered the last three chapters):
“‘Southland Tales; is still unfinished. I’m still beating the drum to try and do that one day. I joked that I’m going to be in the Academy old folks home finishing ‘Southland Tales’ […] That’s a big complicated thing and it involves money and a lot of cast members. I’ve also been waiting for the technology to catch up in terms of licensing […] I’m hoping to expand and realize the full six chapters and the graphic novel. We’ll see. I’m going to keep banging the drum.”
Kelly, who was only 26 when “Donnie Darko” was released, subsequently has only made one other film – 2009’s “The Box”. Since then he’s tried to get more made but has always been hitting “roadblocks and obstacles… I wish I could have made more films, but I’m really excited about what the future holds.”
