The Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez-led Spanish-language musical drama “Emilia Perez” has been the biggest hit of the Cannes Film Festival thus far.

The film earned the biggest standing ovation of the first few days of the fest with total applause clocking in at over eleven minutes. Many reviewers and reactions are dubbing it the first major Palme d’Or contender of the fest.

Karla Sofía Gascón and Edgar Ramirez co-star in the film which hails from director Jacques Audiard (“A Prophet,” “Rust and Bone,” “Dheepan”).

Saldaña stars as Rita, an overqualified and undervalued lawyer at a rather corrupt firm. She finds a potential way out when she is recruited by Manitas (Gascón), a feared drug cartel leader who aims to surreptitiously complete a sex change operation to become the woman he’s always wanted to be.

Gomez plays Manitas’ unsuspecting wife. Audiard calls the film an “opera libretto in four acts” with characters breaking out in original songs that drive the story.

Pathé has acquired French distribution rights and will release the movie in French theaters.
