Microsoft will reportedly add this year’s “Call of Duty” game to its Game Pass subscription service on day one of its release according to the Wall Street Journal.
This would mark the first time a “Call of Duty” game has been included in such a service at launch and would make the entry cost for the game as little as $11.
The article calls this a “major shakeup of its videogame sales strategy”, switching from its “longtime, lucrative approach of only selling it a la carte.”
The game franchise has almost uniformly had the year’s best-selling title with the new release targeting a late October date.
Microsoft recently announced plans to hold an Xbox Games Showcase on June 9th followed by another digital presentation for a ‘mystery game’.
The news comes at a time when Microsoft is still facing a lot of blowback for closing multiple studios of late, whilst sales figures aren’t good with the PS5 outselling the Xbox Series X/S by around 5:1 this past quarter according to Forbes – and that’s without any major PS exclusives in the period.
In addition a report at Windows Central indicates Microsoft is planning to bring additional titles to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch formats in the near future under an initiative codenamed ‘Latitude’. It follows on from titles like “Sea of Thieves” and “Hi-Fi Rush” having successful PlayStation launches.
