For over a year, former film trade writer Kris Tapley has been doing 50MPH – a deep dive podcast look into 1994’s Jan deBont-directed action classic “Speed” ahead of the film’s 30th anniversary next month.
Nearly 120 people have guested on the podcast including nearly every surviving actor, almost all of the major crew, executives, writers and filmmaker fans like Paul Verhoeven, Guillermo del Toro, John McTiernan, Barry Jenkins and more.
Today though came the most anticipated guests of all – a joint interview with the film’s leading stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Their chemistry helped the film become the fourth highest-grossing movie of 1994 with $350 million worldwide.
The pair were inevitably asked about the possibility of a third “Speed” film with both (Reeves skipped the second), with Reeves saying: “I mean, you know – we’d freakin’ knock it out of the park.”
Bullock went on to discuss their screen chemistry: “There’s no formula. It just is. Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe. Are we on little scooters at Disneyland?”
Reeves adds: “It does feel like there is a siren call to it, like there’s something that wasn’t done. I would love to work with you again before our eyes close.”
Reeves and Bullock did reunite on screen in 2006’s “The Lake House”. The full conversation, including their thoughts on “Speed 2: Cruise Control,” are up at 50MPH Podcast.
