Despite good reviews, Universal’s “The Fall Guy” is coming in under expectations at the box-office.
Projections of at least $30 million for the Friday-Sunday period have been downgraded to $28 million following a $10.4 million take on Friday.
The film’s CinemaScore sits at A- which suggests audiences are digging the film, but even with a marketing blitz there’s just seemingly too little interest in the movie – especially among younger audiences.
Combined with a production budget said to be around $130-150 million, it’s going to have to make up some serious coin overseas and on home video platforms with Universal potentially having this hit PVOD before month’s end.
Part of the reason it’s not going so great – especially with younger women – could be “Challengers” which fell a fairly good 42% in its second weekend and will take in $8.7 million from Friday-Sunday.
Overall box-office this weekend is at just $73 million and down 55% from last year when Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” brought people out to cinemas.
Coming in third was the re-release of “Star Wars The Phantom Menace” which snagged $2.4 million on Friday and is headed for $7.2 million for the weekend.
There’s been a number of re-releases of late that have all fizzled, but this is going far better than expected. It also brings the film’s domestic lifetime total up to $481.7 million.
In fourth is the widely panned horror film “Tarot” which is headed for a $6.25 million opening weekend. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” rounds out the top five with $4.2 million.
