As part of their annual ‘box office tournament’ look back at previous years, Deadline has announced that Marvel Studios’ “The Marvels” was the biggest bomb of 2023.
The trade indicates the film reportedly had a net loss of $237 million. Disney reportedly spent $270 million making the film, a further $110 million marketing it, a further $21 million in residuals/distribution expenses, and $54 million in interest and overhead. That’s a total spend of $455 million.
Revenue to the studio consisted of $88 million of the $206 million it made worldwide theatrically, along with $40 million from rentals and purchases, and $90 million from streaming. That results in total revenue of $218 million.
Thus a loss of $237 million. Disney was able to get a $55 million subsidy from the UK for filming there so that could be subtracted – bringing it down to $182 million.
Even then, it’s still clearly ahead of second place flop “The Flash” which had a net loss of $155 million. It cost $200 million to produce, $120 million to market, and then a further $85 million spent in residuals/distribution expenses/interest/overhead. Final cost – $405 million,
Warners made $115 million from the film’s $271.3 million global theatrical haul, followed by $50 million from rentals and $85 million from TV and streaming. Final revenue? $250 million and ultimately a $155 million loss which is less than earlier estimates.
Third was “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” which had a $143 million loss. It had the biggest total spend on the list at $516 million of which $300 million came from the production budget. Also making the list were two other Disney bombs – “Wish” which lost them $131 million and “Haunted Mansion” which lost then $117 million.
