It wasn’t until he was out promoting “Shogun” when it launched that actor Hiroyuki Sanada finally confirmed he’s returning in the upcoming “Mortal Kombat” sequel.
Sanada wasn’t photographed on set and his name was seemingly absent from early press releases tied to the film’s production, leading to concerns of recasting.
He confirmed in February that wasn’t the case. Now, with “Shogun” having just ended its run, he has spoken some more and revealed to Screen Rant that there’s a bigger role for Scorpion in the sequel to the 2021 live-action adaptation of the video game.
In the first film, Sanada’s role was mostly limited to the opening and closing ten minutes with a flashback that started the film and a big fight scene at the end. That doesn’t sound like the case here:
“Yeah, exactly, he was a bookend [in the first one]. 10 minutes and 10 minutes. [Laughs] It all depends on the editing, but yeah, I was there [in the sequel].
It was a great reunion on set, most of the cast from the first movie, maybe four or five big new characters in it. The same director, and the same costume designer, it was fun.
In the Australia Gold Coast, right after the strike, we started shooting, and we’re all done now.
Simon McQuoid directs the new film from a screenplay written by “Moon Knight” head writer Jeremy Slater. Almost all the main cast from the first film are back.
The cast includes Josh Lawson as Kano, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung.
They will be joined by Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, CJ. Bloomfield as Baraka, Martyn Ford as Emperor Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Desmond Chiam as Edenian King Jerrod and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.
“Mortal Kombat 2” has not yet set a release date.
