Netflix recently confirmed that its fantasy series “The Witcher” will officially be ending its run with the fifth season.
That season will once again feature Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, the Aussie actor taking over from Henry Cavill for the upcoming fourth season.
Both the fourth and fifth seasons are also confirmed to be produced back-to-back with production now underway.
Well it seems the streamer is getting out of “The Witcher” business altogether in the coming years as What’s on Netflix reports that two originally planned spin-offs have been scrapped.
The site says the long-rumored The Rats prequel and an untitled kid-friendly spin-off are both dead at the streamer. The former would follow a group of street urchins, introduced in the third season finale of “The Witcher,” in the time before they meet Ciri.
Dolph Lundgren, Ben Radcliffe, Christelle Elwin, Fabian McCallum, Aggy K. Adams, Juliette Alexandra, Connor Crawford, Deoudone van der Merwe, Morgan Santo, and Stevel Marc would’ve starred.
Redanian Intelligence adds that filming on “The Rats” took place for two months in South Africa.
Only a small portion of the originally intended full limited series was shot and after reviewing the footage, Netflix decided not to pick it up or repurpose it as a film. They may repurpose some of the footage into flashbacks in the fourth season of “The Witcher”.
Netflix will be releasing its second “Witcher” animated movie “Sirens of the Deep” later this year.
