A month after rumored specs went online, The Verge has reportedly obtained a full list of official specs for the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro console and confirmed those rumors were pretty accurate.
Sources familiar with Sony’s plans indicate that developers are already being asked to ensure their games are compatible with the upcoming console which is rumored to be launching around year’s end. No word as yet when we’ll see a reveal of the console with a first look not expected for months.
Codenamed Trinity, the PS5 Pro will include a more powerful GPU and a slightly faster CPU. The upgrades are all about hitting higher resolutions and frame rates along with better use of ray tracing with more use of the latter actively encouraged.
Additionally games will be able to use a ‘Trinity Enhanced’ (PS5 Pro Enhanced) label if they “provide significant enhancements”.
GPU rendering is expected to be around 45% faster than a standard PS5, and the new console boasts faster system memory to help improve ray tracing in games. Ray tracing on the new console is tipped to be up to three times better than a regular PS5.
The CPU has only a modest boost – a standard mode the same as a PS5, and a ‘high CPU frequency mode’ which sees a 10% increase (from 3.5Ghz to 3.85Ghz), but also results in the GPU being downclocked by around 1.5%. Memory is being upgraded from 448GB/s to 576GB/s, whilst games can use an additional 1.2GB of system memory on the PS5 Pro.
Existing games are able to be patched for higher performance and all copies of games need to work on both models. Sony expects games submitted to certification in August onwards to be compatible with the PS5 Pro.
Sony also is including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) support – essentially their answer to Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR to improve frame rates and image quality via “custom architecture for machine learning”. The new solution replaces a game’s existing temporal anti-aliasing or upsampling implementation. Full HDR support is included.
