Disney has announced that its Thanksgiving animated release “Wish” reached 13.2 million views in its first five days on Disney+ following its launch last Wednesday (April 3rd) on the SVOD platform.
That’s the third most-viewed streaming premiere for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film to date, behind the streaming launches of “Encanto” in December 2021 and “Frozen 2” in March 2020.
This ranking does not include animated films from other Disney studios such as Pixar. Their film “Elemental” had exactly double that figure (26.4 million) in its first five days on the service and was the streamer’s biggest film premiere of last year.
A view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime according to Disney.
The film follows Asha (Ariana DeBose) who is a sharp-witted 17-year-old idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force – a celestial ball of boundless energy called Star.
Together, Asha, her pet goat Valentino (Alan Tudyk) and Star confront a most formidable foe – the ruler of the fantastical land of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine) – to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
The film wound up disappointing critically and commercially in its theatrical release – grossing just over $253 million worldwide. The company should have more success with this year’s Thanksgiving release in the form of the “Moana” sequel on November 27th.
