The producers of Amazon Studios’ new TV series based on the “Fallout” video games have explained the show’s place in the franchise’s timeline.

As previously indicated and unlike other game-to-screen adaptations like “The Last of Us,” “Halo” or “Uncharted” which are their own thing – this is a series that canonically unfolds within the same universe as the games.

Previously co-creator Jonathan Nolan says as each of the games offers a discrete story with a different city & distinct protagonist in each, they’re relatively self-contained. As a result, the “series sits in relation to the games as the games sit in relation to each other. It’s almost like we’re Fallout 5.”

Now, in a new interview with The Direct, showrunners and writers Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner discussed the show’s timeline and how the events of the series unfold after the existing games thus far. Robertson-Dworet says:

“We were pulling a little bit from all of the games. And because our show is set after the games, we wanted to be true to the mythology of all of the pre-existing games, with the exception of we could not commit to a single ending.

There are, of any of the individual games, multiple endings to each game, and to choose one would be to imply that some player’s experience of the games was not actually accurate. So, we tried to allow for all of the possible endings of each game to be true while creating a timeline that our show exists after.”

Graham was asked which of the previous games they referenced or sought influence from the most, to which she diplomatically said she wouldn’t answer because she understands the ongoing fan debate over which is the best (“Fallout New Vegas” right?):

“We do get asked that. And I keep jumping and saying like, don’t answer, don’t answer–because the fan base of ‘Fallout’ is massive, and they can’t agree on which is the best one. And that debate is sort of this ongoing thing for years now. And if we show our hand in either direction, I feel like we’ll be favoring one faction of ‘Fallout’ fan over another, whereas keeping them guessing is somehow more delicious to me as an asshole.”

It’s indicated that the events of the TV series occur in 2296 – around nine years after “Fallout 4” and nearly two centuries after those seen in “Fallout 76” which unfolds the earliest on the timeline in 2102.

The cast is led by Ella Purnell as vault-dweller Lucy, Aaron Moten in the role of Maximus, Walton Goggins plays The Ghoul; and Kyle MacLachlan as Overseer Hank.

Additional cast includes Moises Arias, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, Frances Turner, Dave Register, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton, Rodrigo Luzzi, Annabel O’Hagan and Xelia Mendes-Jones.

“Fallout” the TV series launches in full on April 11th on Amazon Prime Video.
