For what seems like many months, there’s been rumors swirling around the potential return to the “Spider-Man” franchise of filmmaker Sam Raimi.
Raimi of course helmed the three Tobey Maguire-led films in the early 2000s and recently worked on “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for Marvel Studios which is where the Spidey franchise now resides.
That led to understandable speculation and fan pushes for Raimi to return to the Spidey-fold be it either as helmer of the next Tom Holland-led film or a whole new Maguire-led film which is what most of the rumors have been centered on.
Speaking with CBR while attending WonderCon this past weekend, Raimi was asked about that talk and basically called it pure internet BS – saying Marvel and Sony haven’t spoken with him about any such gig… yet:
“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet. I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’
I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.
I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures. But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”
The comments follow remarks from his first “Spider-Man” film’s leading lady Kirsten Dunst who spoke to The Independent about how the film’s iconic upside down kiss scene in the rain was a ‘kind of miserable’ experience to film due to the freezing rain and Maguire essentially couldn’t breathe whilst shooting it.
The Raimi “Spider-Man” trilogy is currently available on the Disney+ service.
