Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has announced he will return to the show. He will write at least one episode that will form part of Ncuti Gatwa’s inaugural run as the Doctor. That means it will air this year.
Moffat created the well-loved British youth TV programme Press Gang, and created both sitcoms and dramas. He was a lifelong fan of Doctor Who and during the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant runs, he wrote some of the most appreciated episodes of the show.
These included The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Silence In The Library, and Blink. That episode won the BAFTA Craft and BAFTA Cymru awards for Best Writer, and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, while launching the career of Carey Mulligan.
He took over from Russell T. Davies as showrunner for the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras. These eras featured some of the strongest dramatic storylines in the history of the show.
He also co-created Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock and was the creator or producer of shows like Jekyll, Netflix’s Dracula, Coupling, and The Time Traveler’s Wife. He co-wrote Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
In a statement, Moffat said:
“I am in fact writing an episode of the series of Doctor Who. Exactly like I said I never would. What can I tell you? There was begging, there was pleading but finally Russell agreed to let me have another go – so long as I got out of his garden.”
Doctor Who is now a joint production between Disney+ and the BBC. The new run will premiere on May 10th on Disney+.
