Spider-Man: Brand New Day would websling to the top of the box office and stay there for six straight weeks despite the competition from some new releases following its release. While still making some coin at the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was finally dethroned last week with the legacy sequel Practical Magic 2, which has Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman returning for some more witchery at the start of the spooky season.
Spider-Man beats Star Wars
Despite not staying number one at the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day had already broken a ton of records and now the Marvel Studios film has claimed the top spot as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time. According to Variety, the latest entry with the Tom Holland web crawler has outgrossed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which ended its run with $936 million and spent a decade on the throne. While not catapulting very far over it, Brand New Day got to claim the spot once it finished the weekend with $936.773 million after being in theaters for 47 days.
The only question is if it has the strength to cross a billion domestically, which some experts do not think is likely without a possible future theatrical re-issue.
When will Peter Parker return?
As expected, a post-credits scene on Spider-Man: Brand New Day slightly hints at his possible involvement in an upcoming Avengers film. However, a month ago, Sony’s Tom Rothman revealed that he has not officially signed Tom Holland on for more movies yet, “No, not in any concrete sense — only aspirational.” But he is incredibly pleased to hear that Holland has been enthusiastically open to play Peter Parker for more entries, “I can tell you when I heard that Tom said that, I jumped for joy. All I will say is that hope springs eternal. I really hope so.”
What lesson has Rothman taken away from the film’s massive success? One of them seems not to be oversaturating the market and create some scarcity. Having to wait five years for the next entry was the perfect way to get audiences yearning. Another part of the hiatus was to figure out how to top No Way Home. He explained, “[Initially,] the problem for a while was, ‘How do you top that? What do we do next when we just put in all our Spider-Men? The strategic decision was — rather than trying what we all thought would be perhaps an empty effort of going quote, unquote bigger — we just went deeper. That was a very conscious choice to focus on how we could make the audience feel. We were fortunate enough to have a director who was able to balance emotion and spectacle.”
