Who’s taking the Golden Lion home this year? At the end of it all, we finally have our winners. The 83nd Venice Film Festival wrapped up this weekend on the Lido island in Venice, and awards were handed out at a fancy awards show in the Sala Grande. The top prize at Venice is a Golden Lion (in honor of the iconic lion that is the symbol of the city) and it’s one of the top prizes in cinema along with the Palme d’Or from Cannes (which was given to Cristian Mungiu in May). This year’s winner is the film Woman Unknown, a Danish feature about a woman just after World War II living in Denmark dealing with intense accusations following the war. Just like last year’s oddball pick, this is another entirely unexpected Golden Lion winner – and a film that most critics (even those who like it) agree isn’t really the best film at the fest and shouldn’t have won. Then again, it is the only film in the Venice Competition line-up that is directed by a woman, and the jury was lead by Maggie Gyllenhaal this year who pretty clearly stated she preferred this film so that a female director is the winner. It’s a good film, but not a great film compared to the other favorites: Possible Love (which did get the second place prize), Wild Horse Nine (which did get Best Actor), Naza (which got a special prize), and Look Back.
