A new behind-the-scenes clip from Godzilla Minus Zero, the upcoming sequel to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One, has been released by Toho and GKIDS. The behind-the-scenes footage offers a look at the production of the highly anticipated Godzilla sequel ahead of its theatrical release, which is swiftly approaching.
Godzilla Minus Zero will have its world premiere as part of the Spotlight Gala selection at the New York Film Festival before opening in Japan and North America. The movie opens in Japan on November 3, which is also Godzilla Day, before arriving in North American theaters on November 6.
Here’s the synopsis: War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.
Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer and director after Godzilla Minus One, which became a worldwide phenomenon and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. He is also overseeing the visual effects on the sequel. According to Toho and GKIDS, Godzilla Minus Zero features more extensive effects work than its predecessor while maintaining the human-focused approach that made Godzilla Minus One such a success.
After the success of the first film, Yamazaki made it clear he was eager to return for the sequel. “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state of peace and calm – but perhaps [it’s the] calm before the storm, and the characters have not yet been forgiven for what has been imposed upon them,” he said. “I don’t know that anyone has pulled off a more serious tone of kaiju-versus-kaiju with human drama, and that challenge is something that I’d like to explore. When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it’s very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component.“
He went on to say that he would have to “make sure that the human drama and whatever’s happening between [the] kaiju both have meaning, and both are able to affect one another in terms of plot development.“
Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, while Minami Hamabe reprises her role as Noriko Shikishima. The returning cast also includes Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, and Mio Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta.
Min Tanaka joins the cast as Kanji Murakami, a biologist who carries psychological scars from his experiences during the war.
Godzilla Minus Zero was the first Japanese production to be filmed for IMAX, featuring imagery and sound optimized for IMAX presentation.
