“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” helmer Destin Daniel Cretton has delivered a critical and commercial smash hit with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” which continues to break box-office records.
Before that, Cretton was originally set to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” a film originally slated for May 2025 which would see the heroes team up to face Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors).
After “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” fizzled and Majors hit legal issues, the project was retooled with Cretton effectively jettisoned in favour of bringing the Russos back for what has become “Avengers: Doomsday”.
In an interview with The Wrap, Cretton confirmed that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige offered him the option of directing “Avengers: Doomsday” first but he turned it down:
“When I told Kevin Feige I didn’t think I was the right fit for that, he mentioned ‘Spidey’ in the room, which was a huge relief to me because I thought he’d be like, ‘OK, see you later’.”
He adds he met “Spider-Man” franchise producer Amy Pascal around “five or six months later” as she called and said: “We still don’t have a script, but we really want you to do this movie.”
It has also been revealed that Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the initial writers on all the Tom Holland-led “Spider-Man” films, also worked on the scripts for both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”.
Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron have previously been indicated as the writers for those films and have very likely built on their work in much the same way “Challengers” writer Justin Kuritzkes did with ‘Brand New Day’.
While Kuritzkes didn’t get a screenplay credit, Cretton tells the outlet his work was invaluable:
“When Justin came in, he brought fresh eyes and a new perspective, and he’s clearly got a different perspective with the way that he writes. He was with me every day throughout the entire process to the end of the movie, and he wrote some of the most beautiful scenes in our movie.”
Cretton’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is now in cinemas and the filmmaker is currently in pre-production on his live-action “Naruto” movie.
