For a long time now, the single biggest ‘spoiler’ talk about “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has been about Sadie Sink’s mystery role.
As far back as late 2024 is when the talk emerged saying Sink was the frontrunner to play the X-Men mutant in an MCU project, but it wasn’t clear which one at the time.
It wasn’t really until earlier this year that it had become all but confirmed, going so far as Sink and Sony having fun with the speculation in online social media posts and in interviews, all while never confirming it.
Now, one week before the film opens, the movie’s lead star Tom Holland has outright dismissed the discussion when an interviewer for L’Orchestra Cinematique asked about the character. He responded: “She [Jean Grey] is not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool.”
A last-minute effort to throw people off the scent? Perhaps. Also possible if she isn’t Grey and people get upset, Sony can point to this and say we weren’t misleading anyone about it.
So far, press who’ve been doing interviews have only seen 35 minutes of the movie and have not seen whom Sink is playing in the film.
The talk comes as the film’s director Destin Daniel Cretton confirmed that the movie cut out a sequence which would’ve seen a whole bunch of villains appearing. He tells Nerdtropolis:
“There was a whole other scene that ended up getting cut from the movie, that we were going to throw a WHOLE BUNCH of villains into one giant fight scene that ended up getting cut. We were looking at a lot of the old classics; it was really fun, though. We got to design a lot of them. Maybe for another one, we’ll bring them back.”
The cast have also talked about how the film is ultimately quite sad, with Holland telling Onic Entertainment: “It’s very sad. I don’t know if it’s the best selling point of the movie…but it’s cathartic…but then also devastating.”
