Amazon Prime Video has shared a first look at “Midnight Mass,” “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” series creator Mike Flanagan’s new TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel “Carrie”.

The eight-episode series marks the first time the story has been adapted for series television, though follows on from multiple film adaptations from Brian DePalma’s 1976 feature (and its little-seen 1999 sequel “The Rage: Carrie 2”), to the 2002 telemovie penned by Bryan Fuller and the 2013 Kimberly Pierce-directed theatrical remake.

In the new take, misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Summer Howell) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan).

After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.

In an interview with EW., Flanagan confirms that those hoping for a faithful adaptation had better look elsewhere as he doesn’t see the point in doing it that way:

“De Palma adapted it faithfully and beautifully 50 years ago. Then it’s been adapted twice after that, officially and unofficially. It’s been imitated scores of times. So for me, this was never going to be a straight adaptation. The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of Carrie. Otherwise, there’s really no purpose in trying to retread ground that’s been so beautifully walked before.”

The result is a story that’s on a much larger scale, introducing various other characters with their own abilities. While it will retain key themes and characters, some key scenes will be very different including the prom.

The cast includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.

“Carrie” will premiere exclusively on Prime Video this Fall.
