Critics may have disliked it, but audiences have propelled the Michael Jackson biopic to a rather astonishing record.
Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael” has surpassed $1 billion in global ticket sales this weekend, becoming the first biopic to achieve the milestone.
The film has pulled in $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 million overseas, bringing the worldwide tally to $1.001 billion as of Sunday.
The movie opened to $97 million domestically and $217 million globally in April and has remained a solid global box office performer for three months thanks to audience word of mouth on the film.
The record overtakes the previous biopic record held by Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” in 2023, and the previous musician biopic record held by “Bohemian Rhapsody” with $911 million.
It’s also Lionsgate’s biggest film to date and its first to ever reach $1 billion, besting the highest-grossing entries in “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” franchise which were both around the $850-865 million mark.
Only one other film has made it past the $1 billion mark so far this year – “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” at $1.008 billion.
