Universal Pictures and Illumination’s “Minions & Monsters” pulled in $13.75 million on its opening day on Wednesday (no previews), easily claiming the top spot.
It pushed “Toy Story 5” to second place, that film earning a further $7-8 million for the day and bringing its domestic total to $326 million.
Projections now have “Minions & Monsters” tracking for around an $80 million five-day domestic debut, some estimating anywhere between $60-90 million. A further $90 million is expected from overseas markets by end of Sunday – meaning a potential $170 million worldwide launch.
The new film follows the early days of Gru’s henchmen in the 1920s heyday of Hollywood from their rise and fall and rise again as movie stars, and defenders of Earth against an alien invasion.
The film sits at 88% from 86 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest critical score for any “Despicable Me” or “Minions” movie to date. It also landed a strong A- CinemaScore from audiences.
It was also incredibly budget-conscious – costing just a net $85 million to produce before marketing. Collectively across six previous entries, the franchise has earned $5.6 billion globally.
