A newly published final major cast list for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has finally ended one of the sillier rumours regarding the film, one that became a big talking point in conservative media.
That speculation was that actor Elliot Page would be playing famed warrior Achilles in the underworld-set scenes of the movie. It began after the film’s full trailer revealed footage of Page’s role with their character asking Odysseus (Matt Damon) who is looking after his wife and son.
The more likely scenario was that he would be playing Elpenor, a crew member of Odysseus in the original work. Turns out, it’s neither role.
IGN Hungary has received a full list of the Hungarian voice cast for the film via Universal’s non-U.S. distributor, United International Pictures. The list includes the roles, the actor in the film for each, and the corresponding Hungarian voice-over artist doing the dubbing for that role.
The list confirms that Page will be playing Sinon, a character not in the original Homer text but who appeared later in Virgil’s Aeneid. Sinon is Odysseus’ cousin and the one who convinces the Trojans to bring the horse into the city by pretending to have been left behind by the Greeks.
The cast list also reveals some of the smaller roles:
James Remar is the blind Underworld prophet Tiresias
Himesh Patel is Odysseus’ incompetent brother-in-law Eurylochus
Logan Marshall-Green is disloyal Ithacan goatheard Melanthius
Mia Goth is disloyal Ithacan maidservant Melantho
Corey Hawkins is the wealthy Egyptian Polybus
Elyes Gabel is a warrior named Elatus
Also listed are Andrew Howard as a ‘politician’, Travis Scott as a ‘bard’, and Bill Irwin as the voice of the Cyclops.
They join Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Samantha Morton as Circe, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Lupita Nyong’o as both Helen and Clytemnestra.
Interesting are the names NOT on the list that are characters in the original work. Athena appears to be the only one of the Greek Gods here, despite Poseidon, Zeus, Hermes and Helios being a part of the story. Also missing are other notable characters like Cassandra, Aeolus, Nausicaa and the aforementioned Achilles. Doesn’t mean they won’t be in the film, but they’re seemingly not on the dubbing cast list.
“The Odyssey” opens in cinemas everywhere on July 17th.
