The official U.S. trailer is out for “Shoplifters” and “Monster” filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Sheep in the Box,” a new sci-fi drama which premiered in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The story unfolds in a Japan a half-step into the future, where drones deliver everything, cars are all electric and generative AI has reached into most corners of family life.

Architect Otone (Haruka Ayase) and her carpenter husband Kensuke (Daigo) are grieving over the death of their young son. They soon learn of a robotics company whose services target families in their same situation.

Said company creates AI-powered humanoid replicas of the deceased, offering families a replacement and continuation of sorts. An android creation of their beloved son then arrives in a box at Otone and Kensuke’s doorstep in the Tokyo suburbs.

“Sheep in the Box” will open in New York and Los Angeles on July 24th before a nationwide rollout in subsequent weeks through distributor Neon.
