“Drive” and “Only God Forgives” filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is finally getting around to directing and producing a new version of the cult 1988 feature “Maniac Cop”.
Mubi is reportedly providing full financing and a wide theatrical release commitment across multiple territories for the film.
Shooting is set to begin in Los Angeles in January 2027, with cast and key crew members yet to be announced.
The original film, penned by Larry Cohen, followed a former highly decorated cop who was framed by his department and eventually murdered in prison. His hatred makes him come back to life, where he stalks New York and murders both guilty and innocent alike.
Refn acquired the rights over a decade ago and has spent many years trying to do a remake of the property. He came close back in 2017 when an Ed Brubaker-penned version was in the works.
Of the newest attempt, Refn says:
“The concept has always appealed to me. In today’s political and social climate, the iconography of ‘Maniac Cop’ alone provokes an immediate, uneasy reaction. I’ve been watching it all unfold while constructing this project in the shadows… waiting. Now, that moment has finally arrived. The time has come to unveil a radical new vision where there is no protection, no safety net, only mayhem…”
Refn is coming off his first film in ten yeard with “Her Private Hell” which played out of competition at Cannes this year.
