Years of rumor, innuendo, agents dropping stories into the press to push their guy forward, online speculation, and flat-out bullshit can now cease. Casting for the next James Bond has officially started. So now the real runners and riders will start to slowly be revealed.
Amazon MGM has reportedly locked down a filming start date of late 2026 for a late 2027 release, and now the wheels are moving.
They confirmed in a statement to Variety that the process has already begun, saying:
“The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”
Previous casting director Debbie McWilliams, long-time Eon go-to, who was responsible for casting Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig in the role, has retired. Now, casting duties will be led by British casting veteran Nina Gold. Her back catalogue is extensive, includng Chernobyl, Game Of Thrones, Hot Fuzz, and The Martian. It also includes Star Wars films, Jurassic World, The Crown, and Hamnet.
Denis Villeneuve is finishing up post-production on Dune: Part Three, and his attention will now turn to this, with producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman driving the process. Steven Knight remains on script duties.
Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson remain frequently linked to the role of 007. Theo James is also mentioned, alongside Richard Madden, but Henry Cavill stands out as the fan favourite, even if he is probably now too old for the part.
The prevailing opinion is that they are looking for somebody in their early-30s who can stay in the role for a long time. This means the actor’s profile must be at the right level to not overshadow the character, and to be able to secure the long-term commitment. This would seem to rule out some of those who are the subject of speculation. Or… will Amazon go in a different direction and throw some Bezos money at a higher profile actor?
