Disney+ and Marvel have now released their one-off special presentation “The Punisher: One Last Kill” and reviews, which had been held back until the episode’s launch, have now arrived.

Reaction seems to be lightly positive for the title which has an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes from 17 reviews and a 65/100 on Metacritic from 9 reviews, though more reviews are expected to come in shortly.

The biggest complaints seem to be about its short 44-minute length and how it doesn’t allow for much exploration of the character beyond the surface level. Others appreciate the tight pacing, calling it muscular and robust. Here’s a sampling of reviews:

“Thanks to Bernthal finally letting loose, “One Last Kill” cements his Punisher as one of Marvel’s most singular performances.” – Jordan Moreau, Variety

“The Punisher: One Last Kill doesn’t do anything particularly new with Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, but it strips down the Netflix series’ formula into a lean, mean, and entertaining short story.” – Jesse Schedeen, IGN

“In terms of no-holds-barred ultra-violence, it’s like John Wick times one thousand.” – Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

“By the end, Frank hasn’t found peace. He’s found something to do. And for this character, that may be the closest he’ll get to hope.” – Mike DeAngelo, The Playlist

“One Last Kill is as single-minded and brutal as its “hero”, Frank Castle. While the first act lingers too long in the ruins of Frank’s old life, once the villains show up, it turns into a lot of guns-blazing fun.” – Will Salmon, GamesRadar

“On the surface, “The Punisher: One Last Kill” lives up to that hype as a gory, standalone, and dark rumination on the tortured man underneath that skull symbol. The only problem is, well, there’s nothing beyond that surface.” – Jeremy Mathai, Slashfilm

The special sees Frank Castle, feeling directionless after avenging the murder of his family, searching for meaning beyond revenge while haunted by ghosts of his past, until he is drawn back into conflict by the crime lord Ma Gnucci (Judith Light). Deborah Ann Woll, Jason R. Moore, Kelli Barrett and Addie Bernthal co-star.
