With its meta comedy tone and smaller stakes, Marvel Studios’ “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” proved one of the most contentious of all their shows because it didn’t fit into the Marvel formula.
That tonal shift proved too jarring for some, even as audiences seem to have warmed up in the years since to MCU works going against the grain – “Wonder Man” for example. Even so, there’s still a part of the Marvel fanbase out there that hate this series with a passion.
Speaking on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast to promote Apple TV series “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed,” Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany was asked about a potential MCU return and whether her character could work in something like an “Avengers” film.
She didn’t rule out a return, but says doing so needs the right person steering it creatively to justify it:
“I don’t know. I think it would take somebody like Jessica Gao to weave her into that world because she knows that character so deeply and loves her and gets her tone, but there is something about She-Hulk being the star of her own show that makes sense. Do you know what I mean? Because of the direct address, she is our narrator. So, I think it would be a real cool challenge to see her in some other context, but I do think like the sort of joy of She-Hulk is in the singularness of it.”
Asked if a second season of the show or a crossover appearance somewhere else was more likely, Maslany says: “I don’t know. I think people would be so mad at me being on their screens again.”
Jessica Gao created the 2022 series, which played like an “Ally McBeal” style legal comedy before the finale broke the fourth wall and confronted the Marvel formula and toxic fandom.
