When the new DCU was launched after James Gunn and Peter Safran were installed as bosses at DC Studios, one thing stood out in their plans. That thing was the continuation of Peacemaker.
So was it a reboot or wasn’t it? Who else would survive from the DCEU to the DCU, and why was it done this way? Fans speculated it was just because Peacemaker was a James Gunn show. It turns out there was more to it than that.
Asked on Threads (and as reported by Dark Horizons), he said the main reason was contracts:
“Peacemaker Season 2 deals were all in place when I became head of DC. It was either break everyone’s contracts and pay out all that money and take away HBO Max’s biggest show at the time or find a way to make it work. I chose the latter. Mostly tho because I love the character and the show and thought he/they could be an important part of the DCU.”
There was also a question around The Suicide Squad and Bloodsport having shot Superman with a Kryptonite bullet to put him in the ICU. If that world was also part of the DCU, then how come Superman opened with the Man of Steel losing his first fight?
“A lot of people are saying this. But is being shot by someone at long distance while you’re not looking ‘losing a fight’? I don’t see Abraham Lincoln having ‘lost a fight’ with John Wilkes Booth.”
The DCU continues in June with Supergirl, meanwhile, Man Of Tomorrow is currently in production. On HBO, Lanterns arrives in August.
On the latter, HBO has pulled all copies of the Lanterns teaser trailer from its various channels, including the HBO, HBO Max, and DC YouTube/social media platforms, with no formal explanation, leading to speculation that something new is coming soon.
