You know what’s always hungry? Hippos. If you don’t believe me, there’s an entire game about it called Hungry Hungry Hippos. This is the inspiration for a new movie.
“Hippos kill for fun!” Come on, this looks like stupid fun. They obviously know what they are doing, and their tongue is firmly in their cheeks.
Hungry stars Madison Davenport, Tracey Bonner, Jim Meckimen, Michel Curiel, Samantha Coughlan, Olivia Bernstone and Joaquim de Almeida. James Nunn is the writer and director. I had to double-take on that name; it’s Nunn, not Gunn.
Nunn is known for movies like Tower Block, Shark Bait and, more recently, Wildcat. I saw Tower Block again about a month ago; it’s a good thriller, but it completely drops the ball at the end. Wildcat was hilariously bad, but that was laughing at it, not with it.
The story for Hungry:
After becoming lost in the Louisiana swamplands, a group of holidaymakers must fight for their lives against a rampaging hippo on the loose.
It’s a trope that’s been done a dozen other ways, with a dozen other animals. However, to my knowledge, this is the first time a hippo has been the killer.
When it said the movie was based on the popular board game, I thought the movie was going to be rolling a handful of Maltesers on the floor at a Weight Watchers meeting. Instead, it’s about a giant killer Hippo, who’s killing for fun!
Hungry is released on the 23rd of June, not sure where yet, cinemas or streaming. I can’t help but think this is a streaming movie, though.
