As we all know, Avengers: Doomsday is on the way. It’s being sold like the second coming of our lord and saviour at the moment. We don’t know how good it’s going to be, but let’s talk about money.

Hollywood is a business; you invest money to make money back. You can then invest it more, make more. For example, see what Disney have been doing and do the complete opposite.

Estimates for the cost of Doomsday are hovering around the $400 million mark. That’s a spicy meatball. Reports are going around that Robert Downey Jr. fee for the movie is, wait for it, $100 million.

This raises some questions for discussion. Firstly, is one actor worth all that money? Yes, I fully understand that RDJ is a ‘brand’, his walking out on stage for the announcement of him playing Dr Doom was an event.

Yes, RDJ will put bums on seats for Doomsday. The money they have spent on him should bring the money back for them. However, movies need to generally turn over 3 times what they cost to make to break even. Doomsday is costing $400 million, meaning a return of $1.2 billion, at the very least.

The hype for the movie is big, but we’ve also had 6 years of crap from Marvel. The hype that people have is nowhere near what it was for Endgame.

Money From Somewhere Else

$100 million is a big wad of cash to find, just for one man. Reports are also in that some people are losing their jobs. Recently, we covered that the new CEO of Disney, Josh D’Amaro, was cutting jobs.

It has been confirmed that “the majority” of the visual effects in Avengers: Doomsday will be “AI-powered”. So, as we find out that RDJ is earning $100 million from the movie, it turns out that “the majority” of the FX teams are losing their jobs.

Andy Park is one person who is being ‘let go’. Park has been at Marvel Studios from 2010 to 2026. He has worked on over 40 movies and been the director of the visual department.

Marvel Studios Visual Development: 2010–2026

End of an era. I was there at the start of a team that broke the mold. 16 years, 40+ films, and 15 films led as Director of Visual Development, I couldn’t be prouder of the history we made.

At least he’s staying positive, but how does this sit with you? Money doesn’t grow on trees, well, the paper does. Paying RDJ for Doomsday seems to have cost a lot for a lot of people.
