Alien 3 remains one of the biggest “what if…?” artefacts in Hollywood history.

From the creatures getting as far as the orbital ring around Earth, to Neill Blomkamp‘s aborted retcon attempt, via all sorts of weirdness like space monks on a wooden planet, the multiple different stories we nearly got are usually more interesting than the finished product.

Director David Fincher’s own bad experiences making the movie led him to always refuse to participate in the creation of a directors cut for Alien 3.

This led to the creation of Alien 3: The Assembly Cut, clocking in at half an hour longer than the original and with a lot of the discussed plot holes ironed out.

Deleted scenes were reinstated and alternate takes were used. It was first made available via the DVD set of all 4 movies, way back in 2003.

Now, with zero fanfare, it has quietly slipped out on streaming, and not on Disney+, which is where you usually find Fox content outside of the US.

This is, strangely, on HBO Max.

It used to be a very rough assembly, but then, in 2010, the Blu-ray version got some post-production, including original cast members re-dubbing, and the product became more polished.

No word on how long this new version will remain available on HBO Max.
