Disney is at the height of its success. The three main properties it owns, Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar, are in the best shape they’ve ever been, making money hand over fist.
This is what all new outlets should be reporting, but they aren’t. Disney has taken those three main IPs and pretty much flushed them down the toilet. Some of the movies have cost the company millions of dollars. The overall losses could be in the billions.
This was all under the rule of Bob Iger. The good news is that Iger is out and stepping away from the CEO of Disney. He’s taking his garbage with him, sorry, I meant that Kathleen Kennedy is leaving Lucasfilm at the same time.
The new CEO of Disney is Josh D’Amaro. So, what do you know about this new guy?
The New Head of Disney
There is an article on Variety, with 5 things you should know about D’Amaro. I’m not going to post them all there, but here are some highlights.
He has a politician’s instinct for connecting with people. To quote Bart, “What an odd thing to say”. Most people seem to think that politicians have zero connection with the ‘working man’.
However, the article goes on to say that:
He’s a minor celebrity among diehard fans of Disney’s parks and is said to be broadly popular among the company’s rank-and-file.
People seem to be accosted by guests of the parks, to hug him and take photos with him.
He delegates responsibility but can also be very hands-on. I hope ‘hands on’ isn’t a #MeToo thing. It goes on to say that D’Amaro is super detail-oriented. It seems that at the parks, he even picks out the colour of the trash cans, and taste checks the popcorn.
He got emotional when he found out he won the CEO job. I would cry too since Iger left it in such a state; it’s like being given the keys to a dumpster, which is on fire. However, it seems he was genuinely moved that he had been picked. An exec showing emotion.
As a college student, he wanted to be an artist. D’Amaro has a bachelor’s degee in business administration, but originally, he wanted to be an artist. He change his course when he was worried about supporting a family on an artists wages.
So, there you have some details about the new CEO at Disney. Reading some of this, he sounds a bit like Walt (Disney), who seemed to have an attention to detail in the parks.
When D’Amaro is in change of his first few movies will be interesting see the results.
