After directing last month’s seventh entry in the series, “Scream” franchise creator Kevin Williamson says he won’t be returning to the director’s chair for the next instalment.

Speaking with the fan site Hello Sidney, Williamson was asked if his work on “Scream 7” made him want to do more directing. He indicates he’s up for directing again, but not within this franchise:

“Not Scream, no. I want to direct another film that I had written, which is just waiting for me to find the time to direct. Right now, I’m working on a couple of TV shows that I’m really excited about. So maybe I’ll direct one of those – who knows? For the next Scream, I’ll probably step back and just be a part of the family again.”

Williamson penned the script for director Wes Craven’s original “Scream” that debuted in 1996 along with the second, fourth and seventh one. “Scream 7” marks the first time he has helmed a film for the franchise and only his second directorial effort overall after 1999’s “Teaching Mrs. Tingle”.

In terms of a “Scream 8” actually happening, he says: “I’m hopeful there will be an 8. No one’s really talking about it yet. We just assume, with the box office, we hope there will be one. But no one’s talking.”

Asked about potential themes for further “Scream” films, he says: “I don’t know. Whoever does it will have to let us know. I have some ideas of where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it.”
