Big show, big shoes to fill, so a big question to ask. Who do you get to score Harry Potter, arguably the biggest television show currently in development? The answer, it seems, is a man who is quickly becoming the most reliable soundtrack composer working today – Hans Zimmer.

Zimmer’s Bleeding Fingers Music Company will compose the score for HBO‘s upcoming Harry Potter TV series. It is a long-term gig. There will be seven seasons, with each season telling the story of each book, or each year at school.

As part of the announcement, Zimmer made a statement to the press alongside fellow Bleeding Fingers Music composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman:

The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude. The responsibility is something that myself, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman do not take lightly. Magic is all around us, often just beyond reach, but as in the world of Harry Potter, you simply must look for it. With this score we hope to bring audiences that little bit closer to it whilst honoring what has come before.”

This would seem to indicate that while Zimmer will be heavily involved, he won’t be scoring the whole thing, and it is more of a team effort. Sensible, given the scope of what is about to unfold.

The cast is set, and filming is well underway. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter. Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger.

Joining them are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, Tristan Harland as Fred Weasley, and Gabriel Harland as George Weasley.

John Williams created the score of the movies, before a range of other composers including Alexandre Desplat took over for later movies in the franchise. The question is, do you use the Williams score as the heart of the new score, or create something new?

Zimmer created a masterful Bond score for No Time To Die, weaving in prior themes and the famous riff with ease. For his Superman score, he moved completely away from Williams’ theme for Man of Steel, even as DC Studios returned to the core of the Superman March for their latest soundtrack.

Harry Potter is expected to make its debut sometime in early 2027.
