Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s opinions have gotten him both praise and flak over the years, but it was some unnecessarily harsh criticism of actor Paul Dano that really made headlines late last year.
Tarantino appeared on a podcast where he dubbed Dano “the weakest f—ing actor in SAG” and added that he “can’t stand” Owen Wilson and didn’t care for Matthew Lillard either. A year earlier, he also said actor George Clooney wasn’t “a movie star”.
Tarantino received a wave of backlash for his comments, with a lot of people coming out in support of them, especially in support of Dano. Now Clooney, appearing at the AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards on Saturday, where he won Best Actor for “Jay Kelly,” addressed Tarantino’s criticism while accepting the award:
“By the way, Paul Dano and Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard, I would be honored to work with those actors. Honored.
[‘Jay Kelly’ was] made by people who love actors – that’s an important part. People I’ve known most of my life… actually, most of them are actors.
I have a great affinity [for them], and I don’t enjoy watching people be cruel. We are living in a time of cruelty. We don’t need to be adding to it.”
Clooney has been praised for his thoughtful comments during the recent press tour for “Jay Kelly,” with a BBC Radio 2 interview by Dermot O’Leary in particular seeing clips going viral as Clooney offered some life insights such as this clip.
