By The first weekend of the New Year is a good one, a combined $127.4 million in domestic box-office being the strongest first weekend of the year since pre-COVID January 2020.
Disney is dominating right now. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is on top with $36 million for the three-day, down 43% in its third weekend and hitting $302 million domestically along with passing the $1 billion mark by the end of Sunday.
Next is “Zootopia 2” with $18 million in its sixth week, bringing its domestic total to $363 million.
Third is the Sydney Sweeney-led “The Housemaid” which continues doing strong business with a further $13.8 million, down just 10% and now at $74.6 million. At this rate, it’ll beat out Sweeney’s rom-com hit “Anyone But You” which ended its run at $88.3 million.
Fourth is “Marty Supreme” which also held well, down by 26% in its third weekend to $11.8 million – bringing its domestic total up to $55.1 million.
In fifth is “Anaconda” with $9.2 million, a drop of just 37% in its second weekend. Sixth is the new “SpongeBob” movie with $7.7 million – a drop of just 31% in its third weekend. Seventh is “David” with $7.6 million.
Down in eighth is “Song Sung Blue,” in its second weekend with $5.5 million, bringing its total to $24.6 million. Ninth is “Wicked: For Good” with $3 million – still taking in money even as the title hit PVOD on Tuesday.
Finally, in tenth is the Daisy Ridley-led Aussie zombie film “We Bury the Dead,” which debuted with $2.8 million. That film has scored good critical reviews, but audience scores have been dire.
All of this follows on from the two-day “Stranger Things” event on Wednesday/Thursday, which made $25-28 million in concession cash with theatre chains collecting around 95% of that.
