The Last Frontier started with a great opening episode that grabbed you and made you want more. By the time I was a few episodes in, I had become bored and found myself rolling my eyes a lot. One day, I decided to watch something else instead of the next episode, and then I just never went back to it.
It seems I was not alone. Almost all of the online chatter about this show seemed to follow the same pattern. It was enough to seal its fate. Apple TV has cancelled The Last Frontier. A rare miss for the little streamer that could?
The Jason Clarke-led action thriller series wrapped up its ten-episode run earlier this month. Now I am simply curious to know how it ended.
Clarke starred as Frank Remnick, the lone U.S. marshal in charge of a quiet, isolated town in the rugged depths of Alaska. A prison transport plane crashes in the remote wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates. Tasked with protecting the town he’s vowed to keep safe, he begins to suspect the crash wasn’t an accident, but the first step of a well-crafted plan with far-reaching implications.
The series co-starred Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessel, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum, and Alfre Woodard. It was executive-produced by Jon Bokenkamp (The Blacklist) and Richard D’Ovidio.
Some reviews said The Last Frontier felt like a really decent mid-budget action movie, ruined by being stretched out over a season. I would agree with that.
