HBO Max’s much-talked-about gay hockey drama “Heated Rivalry” has set a major IMDb record that’s caught everyone, even its own stars, off guard.
The show’s fifth episode, titled “I’ll Believe In Anything,” aired on Thursday and has scored a perfect 10/10 on the site from over 22,000 reviews.
That’s not just the highest-rated episode of television this year, but also tied for the highest of all time with the legendary Rian Johnson-directed “Breaking Bad” final-season episode “Ozymandias” (which admittedly has ten times as many reviews).
The series, based on Rachel Reid’s “Game Changers” book series, follows rival hockey players – one Canadian (Hudson Williams), one Russian (Connor Storrie) – who conduct a secret romance over years. François Arnaud, Christina Chang, Sophie Nélisse, Robert G.K. and Callan Potter co-star.
While the show has been drawing headlines for its explicit sex scenes, the fifth episode was acclaimed for its emotional grounding and led up to a big finale with two supporting characters publicly kissing.
THR has also gone into detail about the show’s surprise massive success which is being driven almost entirely by women.
The sixth and final episode of the first season run premieres on Friday at midnight, with the show already renewed for a second season.
