Earlier this month, with little fanfare, Netflix released Boots. It is based on Greg Cope’s memoir The Pink Marine, and tells the story of a gay teen US Marine Corps recruit in the 1990s who remains in the closet due to the environment he finds himself in.

It was also the final project of Norman Lear, a screenwriting and producing legend who was behind sitcom classics like Good Times and All in the Family. He was also a policial activist who founded the advocacy organization People for the American Way and served with distinction in World War II. He passed away in late 2023.

Boots follows Miles Heizer (13 Reasons Why) as the directionless Cameron Cope, who impulsively follows his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh) to enlist in the military in the 1990s – four years before the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy went into effect, so being gay in the military was still technically illegal.

The show is reviewing well, and is said to portray the military in a positive way, emphasising commitment and cameraderie, with a sentimental view of duty and service. So the reaction of the U.S. Department of Defense is something of a head scratcher.

Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson has issued a statement via Entertainment Weekly saying:

“Under President Trump and Secretary [Pete] Hegseth, the U.S. military is getting back to restoring the warrior ethos. Our standards across the board are elite, uniform, and sex neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight. We will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix whose leadership consistently produces and feeds woke garbage to their audience and children.”

Don’t mince about. Just come out and say it!
