Roald Dahl is arguably the greatest children’s writer of all time, and his body of work goes way beyond a certain boy and his chocolate factory. His work always had a dark edge, and consequences were central to the themes, like in The Twits.

In the gloriously twisted book, centred around Dahl’s distaste for anyone with a beard, was Mr. and Mrs. Twit, a spiteful, lazy, and unkempt couple who continuously play nasty tricks on each other to amuse themselves and exercise their devious wickedness on their pet monkeys.

From this trailer, it looks as if Netflix has veered away from the source material.

The Twits will land on Netflix on October 17th, and this version tells the story of a Mr and Mrs Twit who are the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world, who also happen to own and operate the most disgusting, most dangerous, most idiotic amusement park in the world, Twitlandia.

When the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave children and a family of magical Muggle-Wumps are forced to fight back.

So far, so nothing like the book.

The large voice cast includes Johnny Vegas, Margo Martindale, Emilia Clarke, Natalie Portman, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ryan Lopez, Timothy Simons, Nicole Byer, and Jason Mantzoukas, Alan Tudyk, Mark Proksch, Rebecca Wisocky and Charlie Berens.

Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has written three original songs for the film, and teams up with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for the closing song.

Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong co-direct The Twits.
