I Play Rocky is an upcoming biopic from Amazon MGM Studios. Anthony Ippolito (The Offer, Purple Hearts) stars as Stallone, at that time a struggling actor.

I Play Rocky follows the making of Stallone’s breakout role, the 1976 multiple award-winning Rocky. It starts with Stallone writing a script, and a big movie studio being in the mix to buy it. However, he refuses to sell unless he gets to play the lead, and turns down a huge offer for his script. Instead, he works on the tightest budget imaginable to get the movie made.

The rest would become cinema history, as Rocky goes on to become the biggest box office hit of 1976, gets nominated for ten Oscars, wins best picture, and launches two franchises.

The villain who became an ally and a friend, Apollo Creed, is central to the movie and the sequels, and it has been announced that Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk, Race) will play Carl Weathers.

Weathers was a professional football player turned actor, and his surprisingly nuanced performances added significantly to the legend of the franchise. Weathers would reprise the role three times, and the character’s son, Adonis, would be central to the continuation franchise, Creed.

Peter Farrelly (Green Book) directs, while Peter Gamble (Office Uprising) wrote the script. Farrelly, Toby Emmerich, and Christian Baha are producing.
