James Gunn has posted a screenshot on X of his latest Man of Tomorrow screenplay. Man of Tomorrow is DCU’s sequel to this year’s Superman and is slated for release in July 2027.

The screenplay cover features a profile image of a human brain, straight out of a science book. Fans are speculating that this could herald the big screen debut of supervillain Brainiac.

I’ve heard of the character, but I had to look him up as I don’t know much about Superman villains outside of the live action movies. I am more familiar with the term ‘brainiac’ as an insult that gets hurled at nerds, or a sarcastic insult that gets hurled at stupid people.

Brainiac’s name, a portmanteau of the words ‘brain’ and ‘maniac,’ actually inspired the insult, and in my view it undermines his credibility. I mean…it’s not the fault of the character or his creators that his name has become a punchline, but it still sounds dumb to me.

What can you do? I still feel sorry for all the Karen’s out there (except the ones who are Karens).

Nice one, Brainiac

Brainiac was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino and first appeared in Action Comics #242 in 1958. He is a highly intelligent cyborg from the planet Colu and regarded as one of Superman’s greatest enemies.

Brainiac has been portrayed in live action on the small screen in Smallville and Krypton but Man of Tomorrow would be his first big screen outing.

Of course, all this could be misdirection, but it’s fun to speculate. Anyone excited to see Brainiac on the big screen, or has the novelty of comic book characters being teased worn off?

Man of Tomorrow will see the return of David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Recent concept art shows Lex Luthor in an Iron Man style suit, but will he be Superman’s nemesis this time, or an unlikely ally?
